Hulme Family Tree

Eveline Hulme's grandparents were John and Esther Hulme (nee Willett). John Hulme Snr. was born in Salford, Lancashire in 1824 and was christened in Salford Cathedral July 11th 1824. He married 18-year-old Esther Willett July 15th 1845 in the Cathedral, Manchester. This would have been when the Cathedral was still a Collegiate Church, as it was not raised to the status of a Cathedral until 1847. There is an interesting account of why so many marriages took place in the Collegiate Church (also known as Christ Church in the early 19th Century) at:

Manchester Cathedral

I can't find any mention of John and Esther in the 1851 Census, although they would have had their two eldest sons, Joseph and Henry by that time. In 1853, their son John was born in Colne, Lancashire, so either the family were living there, or Esther went to relatives to have her baby. By 1861, the family was living at 14 Broadie Street, Hulme.

John and Esther had eight children in all; Joseph (1846), Henry (1848), Harriett (1851), John (1853), Samuel (1857), George Alfred (1860), Martha Ann (1862), and Esther (1864).

In the 1871 Census the family had moved to 103 Clarendon St. John Hulme Snr. is again working as a mechanic. John died in 1879 at the age of 55. By the time of the 1881 Census, Esther is now the head of the household and listed as a Newsagent and Stationer. Several of her children are still living at home. Samuel, now aged 24 is an apprentice bookbinder; George Alfred, 21 is a commercial traveller in sewing cotton; Martha Ann is 18 and has no occupation, and Esther, aged 17 is a dressmaker.

They also have Esther's Grandson, John Frederick listed. At first I thought he might be the illegitimate son of Martha Ann, but as he was aged 8, this was obviously impossible. John Frederick was probably the son of one of Esther's older married children, and he was likely just visiting his Grandmother on the night of the Census.

By 1891, Esther is still living in the same place and working as a stationer. By now, only Samuel is living at home, still unmarried at age 35. Esther doesn't appear on the 1901 Census, so I assume she died between 1891 and 1901.

John's mother Esther was born Esther Willett. Please go to the WILLETT FAMILY PAGE for their information.
