Joseph Skidmore's parents were George Skidmore and Margaret Newall. They belong to the Williams line of the family.

Williams Family Tree

According to the 1851 Census, George Skidmore was born in 1813 in Warslow, Staffordshire and he was also a Warehouseman like his son Joseph. At this time the family were living at 7 Clare Street, Hulme, Manchester. Joseph was the eldest, and at age 14 he was an errand boy. His sister, Hannah was 10 and at school and there was a much younger brother, George, aged 10 months.

George's wife Margaret was born in Winsford, Cheshire in 1810. There are Christening records in the Family Search International Genealogical Index that say she was christened February 19th 1810* in the ancient St. Chad Church in Over, Cheshire, which was buit in 1307. There is a description of this church at:

Genuki Cheshire, Over and a local history site with a picture of the church at:

Saint Chad's Church at Over, Cheshire

George and Margaret were married February 2nd 1835* in Over by Middlewich, Cheshire, which would have been at St. Chad's Church - the bride's parish. The couple must have lived in Winsford when they were first married, as that is where Joseph was born. They must have moved to Salford, Lancashire in the four years after that, as that is where Hannah was born, and then to Hulme, where young George was born.

Canal at Middlewich
Middlewich is a beautiful area in Cheshire, and is a popular canal boating area with the Middlewich Narrowboats.

By 1861, the family were living at 26 Brunswick Street, Hulme, but Joseph had already married and started his own household by this time. Hannah was now aged 20 and a reeler in a factory, and young George was aged 10. Margaret's mother, Betty Newall, aged 77 was also staying with them at the time the Census was taken, and she may have been living there permanently.

Margaret's parents were Joseph Newall (or Newell, although Newall seems the most common spelling) and Betty Moss. Betty was born in 1784 in Northwich, Cheshire. Like their daughter, Margaret, they were married in Over by Middlewich, Cheshire, so probably at St. Chad's in Over. The date of their wedding was May 6th 1805*.
